In this scene that flashes back to the original story, Kong plummets earthward after his vain attempt to defend Ann Darrow. His tortured expression still shows a spark of life as the fallen King tries to comprehend what has just taken place. The strange mechanized birds of prey, their grizzly job accomplished, wheel skyward. The muffled drone of their engines and the wreak of sulfur hang in the air.
